Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) for treatment and self-help
Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, was founded in 1995 by Gary Craig, through simplifying Dr. Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy (TFT). It is a modern development from ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine and involves tapping with fingertips on a small number of key acupuncture points, while focusing the mind on a health or personal issue. This is scientifically proven to lead to physiological balancing in the body and thereby to cause significant improvements in physical and emotional well-being. EFT is well tolerated and gentle, since no needles are required. It is easy to learn and can therefore also be used as a safe and effective self-help technique.

For clarity and to distinguish his work from other therapies, Gary speaks about ‘Official EFT’, which includes his classic ‘Gold Standard EFT’ with acupoint tapping, and a later development called ‘Optimal EFT’, which uses a spiritual approach in addition to many of his EFT tools, but no tapping. I mainly use ‘Gold Standard EFT’, however as a student of Gary Craig’s Optimal EFT instruction at http://optimal-eft.emofree.com I am familiar with the theory and process and do include elements of it in my approach when appropriate.
There are also plenty of written templates published on the internet and video demonstrations on YouTube. These can be very helpful for getting a feel for what the therapy involves. However, please remember when using them on yourself that the quality can vary and that they may not always be effective, since it is important to make the tapping as personal to your own experience as possible. Another benefit of working with a therapist is that they are able to help you overcome possible blind spots you may have about your problem. Please always work with a therapist on issues with a very high emotional charge.
